Playful over Atomic

Last week, we talked about why rigid accountability and “all or nothing” habits might be working against us more than they’re helping. So, what’s the alternative?

Instead of aiming for strict discipline, let’s talk about building playful habits. When we approach work and routines with play in mind, we create habits that are energizing rather than exhausting. And here’s the best part: playful habits are inherently more sustainable because they’re built on curiosity, enjoyment, and the willingness to try things a bit differently—qualities that keep us coming back for more without the pressure.

So, how do you actually create a playful habit? Start by swapping out that old “grit-your-teeth” mindset for one that allows you to explore. Here are three steps to get you started:

  1. Start Small and Curious
Rather than jumping into something intense, start with a small, fun challenge that you genuinely want to do. Trying to improve team communication? Set up a daily “Random Fact of the Day” chat, where team members share something interesting. TO BE CLEAR - this is not about sharing “fun facts” about ourselves. No one likes that, TRUST US. RANDOM fact sharing can build connection and give a lighthearted start to everyone’s day.

  2. Experiment Freely (and Laugh When It Doesn’t Work!)
Rigid habits often fail because they leave no room for flexibility. When you treat habit-building as an experiment, you’re free to adapt and evolve it as needed. Miss a day? Change up the format? Perfect! That’s all part of the play. Think of it as a way to learn and tweak, rather than a pass/fail situation.

  3. Tackle Challenges Playfully with the Right Tools
This is where the Playful Strategies Deck can be a game-changer. Each card in the deck offers a strategy to approach challenges in a more playful, flexible way. Instead of feeling stuck or stressed by obstacles, the deck helps you and your team find lighthearted, creative solutions that reframe difficulties as opportunities for growth. Whether you’re facing a tight deadline, a complex problem, or a need for fresh energy, the deck offers targeted strategies to help you move forward with resilience and a touch of playfulness.

At BoredLess, we use playful strategies like these to make the IGN!Te Framework more than just a set of values—it becomes a way of life for teams. Whether it’s sparking creativity, building connections, or making day-to-day tasks more enjoyable, play is the foundation for forming habits that stick because they’re genuinely enjoyable.

If you want to build lasting habits, make play your starting point. Real change happens when we’re engaged and energized, not when we’re forced to check a box.

Ready to make your team’s habits a bit more playful? Let’s connect, and I’ll show you how the Playful Strategies Deck can help you and your team unlock fresh ways to engage and thrive at work.
