Four Cs Wrap Up
What Makes an ERG Effective
Over the past few weeks, we’ve looked at four areas that shape how ERGs function over time:
Culture
Communication
Commerce
Careers
Each one operates differently, but they are closely connected in practice.
Culture shapes how people experience the ERG.
Communication determines whether that experience is understood and sustained.
Commerce connects the work of the ERG to the broader organization.
Careers reflect how individuals grow through participation.
When one area is underdeveloped, the impact of the others is limited. When they are aligned, the ERG becomes more consistent, more relevant, and more effective over time.
This is not a matter of adding more activity.
It is a matter of paying closer attention to how interactions are shaped, how purpose is communicated, how connections are built, and how participation evolves.
Most ERGs already have the intention.
The difference is often found in how that intention is carried through in practice.
A small next step
Looking across the four areas:
Where does your ERG feel strongest? And where does it feel less defined?
Thank you for being part of this series. This series drew on the Four Cs framework (Culture, Communication, Commerce, Careers), widely associated with the work of Robert Rodriguez in ERG strategy and leadership.

Take the Four Cs:

Now give each one a new title! You could make it alliterative or even an acrostic!
A practical resource
If you’re thinking about how to create more meaningful experiences within your ERG—for yourself and for others—the Playful ERG Experiences guide offers practical ways to approach those moments with more intention.
It’s designed to support how you think about participation and interaction over time, not something to run as-is.
