When Octopuses, Elk, and Armadillos PlayExternal
We all know that cats chase laser pointers and dogs love a good game of fetch, but did you know that octopuses, moose, and even elk engage in play? The animal kingdom is full of surprising examples of creatures at play—and they have a lot to teach us.
Take the octopus for example. These intelligent sea creatures have been observed playing with objects like bottle caps, shooting them around with water jets just for fun. It's a reminder that play isn't just about passing the time—it's a way to explore, learn, and enjoy life, even in the deep sea.
Then there are armadillos. These fascinating creatures, often seen as solitary and armored, have been observed engaging in playful behavior, rolling around in dirt and playing with objects in their environment. It’s a delightful contrast to their tough exterior and a great reminder that playfulness can be found in the most unexpected places.
And recently, a video captured elk playing soccer with a group of kids in Evergreen, Colorado. These typically majestic and somewhat stoic animals surprised everyone by kicking around a soccer ball with as much enthusiasm as any young player on the field. You can watch the full video here.
These examples got me thinking about how play shows up (or doesn’t) in our work environments. What if we embraced the idea that play is essential, even for us humans in our busiest professional settings?
So, how can we bring a little more octopus, armadillo, and elk energy into our work?
