Why HR Keeps Getting Engagement Wrong

HR leaders are under constant pressure to improve engagement, reduce burnout, and create workplaces where people actually want to be.

And yet, we keep seeing the same solutions:
More meetings
More pizza parties
More forced “fun” activities

But here’s the truth: None of these things actually fix burnout.

Last week, I spent the day at Mile High SHRM, where I had some incredible conversations with HR professionals tackling these very challenges. I also shared quick play breaks with attendees—and watching people light up after just a few moments of play? That was all the proof I needed.

Play isn’t about adding more to an already packed schedule. It’s about creating space—for creativity, autonomy, and connection. It’s about changing the way we engage with work instead of just tacking on surface-level “perks.”

The problem? Most workplaces don’t understand how to do this effectively. And honestly, I get why—because we were never taught how.

So let’s talk about what actually works:

Tiny, intentional play breaks that help reset focus and energy.
A culture that values curiosity and experimentation, not just efficiency.
Leadership that fosters psychological safety so people feel free to explore new ideas.

This is what truly boosts engagement.
