Have you Seen “Severance?”

Have you watched the show Severance? It’s a fascinating (and slightly unsettling) take on the idea of work-life balance. In the show, employees undergo a procedure that surgically divides their memories of work and personal life. Essentially, they become two different people depending on whether they’re at the office or at home. (If you don’t have AppleTV, wait until Season 2 is about to come out, then binge season 1 and 2 during a free trial ;)

It’s a thought-provoking concept, but let’s be real—work-life balance, as a strict separation, doesn't really exist. We're not characters in Severance with separate lives for work and home. Work is just a part of life for the vast majority of us, so if we can’t balance or separate it, we need to learn how to integrate it and make it fulfilling and beneficial for us as humans!

One of the best ways to do this is by integrating play into our daily routines. Play isn't just for kids; it's a powerful tool for fostering creativity and innovation. When we engage in playful activities, we unlock fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. It’s no wonder that companies encouraging playfulness often see their employees excel in problem-solving and creative thinking (Pixar, Menlo Innovations, Figma, etc).

Here’s how integrating play into your workday can make a difference:

  • Seamless Integration: Recognize that work and life are interconnected. By weaving play into your routine, you can create a more harmonious and enjoyable experience. Play isn’t just fun and games, it can be a mindset and behavior shift!

  • Reduce Stress: Engaging in playful activities helps release endorphins, reducing stress and promoting relaxation, which benefits both your work and personal life.

  • Boost Creativity: Play stimulates your mind and encourages innovative thinking, leading to fresh ideas and solutions in all areas of life.

  • Enhance Well-Being: Incorporating play promotes joy and fulfillment, contributing to overall happiness and life satisfaction, making you more resilient and productive.

All of this is based in the neurochemicals that are released when we play. The benefits are numerous and incredible.

So, let’s forget the idea of surgically separating our work and personal lives. Instead, let’s embrace the intertwined nature of our existence and find joy in both.
