First Ever International Day of Play
Today, on the first-ever International Day of Play, let's recognize that play isn'tjust for kids—it’s crucial for adults too, especially in the workplace.
Some of my work focuses on helping folks tap into dopamine at work. You might think dopamine is only for after-work fun and social lives, but hold up! Dopamine isn't just for feeling good during fun activities; it's essential for key workplace skills:
Memory and Learning: Dopamine helps encode new memories and improve retention, making it easier to learn and recall information.
Focus and Attention: It enhances our ability to concentrate on tasks, reducing distractions and improving productivity.
Creativity and Problem-Solving: Higher dopamine levels are linked to increased creativity, allowing for more innovative solutions and ideas.
The LEGO Foundation found that “Joy {from dopamine} invokes a state of positive affect that enables many higher cognitive functions.”
However, getting dopamine, especially at work, can be challenging when we often only have a few minutes to spare.
So, consider creating a "Dopamenu"—a curated list of activities to give your brain that dopamine boost. Here are some quick, playful activities to add to your Dopamenu:
Scribble Birds: A fun drawing exercise where you turn random scribbles into birds, boosting creativity and relaxation.
Worst First Brainstorming: Use ChatGPT to brainstorm the worst ideas first, then flip them into innovative solutions.
Quick Play Breaks: Simple games or challenges, like a quick dance or a short puzzle, to refresh your mind.
Anticipation Activities: Plan something exciting or even simply new to look forward to; even small things can make a big difference. (Take a different route on your next walk, or take a different path home from work!)
