The Dodgers, a crossword puzzle, and play at work?

Do yall follow any newsletters that share surprising stories? Seemingly off-topic? I receive the MLB Lineup, and it’s mostly a roundup of what to expect for the day’s upcoming games, but they share feel-good stories too! Monday, they shared a story about the Dodgers’ rookie left‑handed reliever Jack Dreyer and his handmade crossword puzzle.

Sonja Chen with the MLB Dodgers Beat reported on the story, sharing that Dreyer started creating puzzles in 2021 and shared his skill with teammates earlier this season to great acclaim! They even asked him to make more. As a rookie, in a clubhouse with 40~ professionals, some of whom are global celebrities, finding a way to connect and stand out is no small feat.

I don’t share this just because I like crossword puzzles (well, just the NYT mini, I’m not actually a big fan of the bigger ones myself), I share this because this is Playful Work Design in action!

Probably without even realizing it, Dreyer created connection and psychological safety for himself and teammates. He’s also supporting his on-field success. Numerous studies have found playful expressions like this improve our cognitive, mental, and even physical abilities (it’s neuroscience!!)

What piece of “you” could bring people together at work? A hobby, a subtle passion, a curious obsession?

So next time you’re thinking of workplace perks or team-building rituals, don’t overthink it. Maybe just ask yourself: What’s that little thing I love doing that other people might find unexpectedly brilliant?
