Star Wars and the NCAA Men’s Tourney?
What do facial injuries, NCAA basketball, and Star Wars models have in common?
A lot more than you’d think.
After a brutal fall (I don’t recommend looking up the clips) left Louisville forward James Scott with major facial and dental injuries, two engineers—Sophie Wegenast and Justin Gillham—were called in to help. They weren’t sports medicine experts. They weren’t even sports fans.
But they were playful, curious, and creative.
In less than 24 hours, using skills honed from building D&D miniatures and Star Wars replicas, they designed and 3D-printed a custom, NCAA-approved protective mask. Scott was traveling with the team the next day and back on the court four days later.
Let that sink in:
⚡ Not traditional training
⚡ Not years of sports-specific expertise
⚡ Just PLAY, creativity, and the ability to act fast
This is a masterclass in how non-work hobbies and playful thinking fuel innovation when it matters most.
These moments aren’t just cool stories. They’re reminders that play is a tool, not a distraction. And your team has access to that same kind of power.
