Acceptable Mediocrity

Flow and play have so many connections. I designed & facilitate a workshop called Play Your Way to Flow and I am currently working on a course on the same topic. There’s a chart that shows the relationship between ability (or skill) and challenge (difficulty) regarding the general feelings associated with each situation. You can find it easily by searching “flow” and clicking images. The basic idea is that you can reach a state of flow when you have high skill or ability in a challenging situation (there are several other traits, which you can learn about in my course!).

In my study of flow and play, this chart always seemed to be missing something and I realized it was that the middle intersection of moderate skill or ability and moderate challenge didn’t have a “label”. So I added one.

Acceptable Mediocrity

This is where most of us live our lives. Doing things that are not too hard or too easy, but also not very interesting or rewarding. This is where we settle for good enough, but not great.

So how do we get from that middle box to the upper right corner and actualize peak experience? I think you know where this is going…

Neuroscience tells us that play is a direct path to increased cognitive skills. Playfulness can help us overcome the fear of confronting new challenges and make us open to fresh and unfamiliar opportunities.

Say it with me “play is the answer”! (Isn’t it always? Well, yeah.)

Getting into flow isn’t difficult when you understand the parameters. Don’t settle for good enough. I’ll walk you through exactly why and how in the course. (Until my course is live, you can learn a little more about it here.)
