What do we want? When do we want it?
Last week, I saw a post on LinkedIn that shared a graphic showing “What Employers Think Employees Want” compared to “What Employees Want”. That post said that employees just want more money and maybe some pizza. But the research (Gallup, Deloitte, HBR, etc) does not support this at all (the salary part, most people definitely want some pizza).
Employees are NOT leaving for more money. They are seeking flexibility, recognition, psychological safety & trust, inclusion, autonomy, and fair pay.
Your employees are no longer willing to sacrifice their mental and physical well-being for inflated salaries. People will take lower-paying jobs if they can find what's listed in the column on the right.
And you know what can instill all those aspects into an organization?
Playful Work Design! Yep. Applying the principles of playfulness to your organization allows for each of these aspects to be part of your company culture: flexibility, recognition, psychological safety & trust, inclusion, autonomy, and fair pay. As your employees and new hires experience each of these, employee engagement and retention will skyrocket. (and the research shows that employee engagement is a key impact metric on overall productivity and profitability).
For fun, I asked an AI chatbot to create an acronym for us to help us remember what employees really want. Which one do you like best?
